Upcoming Classes

Writers Workshop | $25/session (free for members) | Every other Thursday, 7-9pm | A collaborative space for writers of all stripes and fitness levels to develop new work, sharpen their craft, and build a sustainable creative practice
Class description

We welcome writers of all stripes and fitness levels to join any and all of our bi-monthly, drop-in sessions—even (or especially) if you don’t consider yourself a writer, but are just curious about what salutary benefits might attend maintaining a consistent writing practice. Light refreshments will be served.

Our Writers Workshop is a collaborative space for writers of all levels to develop new work, sharpen their craft, and build a sustainable creative practice. Participants share pages, receive thoughtful feedback, discuss elements of fiction and nonfiction craft, and engage in guided writing exercises designed to generate momentum and deepen revision. Whether you’re beginning a new project or refining a finished draft, the workshop offers structure, accountability, and an encouraging literary community.

What to expect: As your host and moderator, I’ll guide the conversation towards generating as much constructive feedback and literary insight for each writer as possible and close with an opportunity for the heretofore “silent save-the-sound-of-furious-notetaking author” to ask any questions, respond to comments, or simply thank the group for their generous feedback and exercise their right to remain silent with some small gesture indicating that the group should please move onto the next text.

How it works: Simply submit a piece of writing up to ten pages long at least 48 hours beforehand to info@thewritersgym.studio. Then read everyone else’s work and come prepared with notes & reactions to contribute to the discussion.

Supplies and materials: We’re happy to provide pen and paper, but also have plenty of outlets should you prefer to bring your own laptop and power cord. Please feel free to BYOB for courage!

Young Voices: The Personal Narrative | $25/session | Thursdays, 4-6pm | Get your essays in shape for the college app season
Class description

We welcome high school juniors & seniors to join this supportive workshop focused on crafting compelling personal narratives in preparation for college application essays. Whether you already have a draft or are starting from scratch, this class will help you discover meaningful stories, sharpen your voice, and develop the confidence to write authentically.

Designed to help high school students develop the storytelling, reflection, and revision skills essential to writing strong college essays and personal statements. Through guided prompts, close reading, discussion, and workshop feedback, students will learn how to identify meaningful experiences, shape them into engaging narratives, and communicate their individuality with clarity and honesty. The class emphasizes voice, structure, specificity, and revision while creating a supportive environment where students can experiment, take creative risks, and gain confidence in their writing.

I’ve helped students craft compelling application essays to gain acceptances into Harvard Law, The Fuqua School of Business at Duke, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Yale, University of Chicago, McGill, Brown, Columbia, UC Schools, and Boston College.

What to expect: Students will participate in guided writing exercises, brainstorming activities, and group discussions focused on developing authentic personal narratives. We’ll explore what makes an essay memorable, how to balance reflection with storytelling, and how to revise for clarity, emotional resonance, and impact. Writers will have opportunities to share work, receive constructive feedback, and leave each session with stronger material and greater confidence in their voice.

How it works: Each session begins with a brief discussion of craft and examples of successful personal narratives, followed by guided writing prompts and dedicated writing time. Students may workshop existing drafts or generate entirely new material during class. Group feedback and one-on-one guidance will help students refine ideas, strengthen structure, and deepen reflection as they move toward polished college essays and personal statements.

Supplies and materials: We’re happy to provide pen and paper, but also have plenty of outlets should you prefer to bring your own laptop and power cord. Please feel free to bring any existing essay drafts, notes, or application prompts you’d like to work on.
